ORGATEC TOKYO: The Unfolding Possibilities of Office Furniture

The fourth edition of ORGATEC TOKYO was held from 3 to 5 June 2025. It gathered 157 companies and 45,000 visitors. The fair targeted offices and public spaces, covering a range of products including furniture, elements of interior design, materials, lighting, and even services. The venue’s connected upper and lower floors saw a constant flow of visitors moving between them. Amidst the activity, familiar faces reconnected, and meaningful business exchanges took place. Such meetings and discussions that can only be had at in-person events made the industry heat up during the three days of the event. Going forward, expectations are high for ORGATEC TOKYO.

ITOKI gathered the most attention. Having tapped Hirotaka Tako, previously director at Sony in London, as the creative director, they announced the new product line “NII”.

The series was designed by four teams of designers in New York and Italy, with not only the domestic market but also the global market in mind. One standout piece was the glass table CONNEXA. It combines four types of glass tabletops with five kinds of frames. Notably, the glass tabletops can be arranged at angles, and the joints between the steel legs and the two-layer reinforced glass tops are seamless, appearing almost as if they are held together by suction.

The public sofa BITMAP incorporates bent metal sheets and features arms that are sturdy enough to lean on or even sit on.

Recently, cocoon-type chairs prioritising privacy have become common. While the PIGNA follows this trend, it has a unique design, consisting of small panels arranged like roof tiles. It is put together by attaching thin veneer to metal, showcasing ITOKI’s technical prowess. The back of the chair also serves as a partition and comes in three heights: high, middle, and low, allowing users to choose their desired level of privacy. The furniture of the “NII” line emphasises not only functionality but also “design that inspires creativity”, helping the user get into a creative mood.

On why so many American designers are involved with the line, Mr. Tako explains, “The place where the office furniture market is overwhelmingly large, even in global terms, is the US. It’s on a different scale. These designers bring new values with them and serve as a bridge to that market.”
The debut of world-class public furniture is likely to have a significant impact on the industry.
